A cozy cabin, a crackling fire, crisp mountain air, and nowhere you really need to be. Except with the love of your life.

There’s something about fall in the Sierra that makes a getaway feel a little more romantic.

Maybe it’s the cooler evenings. Maybe it’s the changing leaves. Maybe it’s sitting beside a fire with a cup of something warm while the rest of the world seems miles away.

Whatever it is, fall gives us a pretty good excuse to get away for a night or two.

So we went looking for five places that could make a particularly good fall escape for two. From classic mountain cabins to a night under the stars.

These five unique experiences will give you a great opportunity to enjoy a little more time together.

Near Yosemite

If your idea of romance includes a beautiful cabin, tall trees, good food, and a little adventure, Evergreen Lodge is hard to beat.

Their private cabins are tucked into the forest, with options designed specifically for couples. The Deluxe Cabins feature king beds, sitting areas, gas fireplaces, and private decks facing the surrounding forest.

And this is one of those places where you don't necessarily need to leave the property once you arrive.

Have dinner at the lodge, grab a drink at the tavern, take a walk through the trees, then settle in by the fire.

Or spend the day exploring Yosemite and come back to a warm cabin instead of a long drive home.

Romantic move: Take a late-afternoon Yosemite drive, come back for dinner, and end the night sitting on your cabin deck with a beverage of choice, and the sound of the forest around you.

Hardin Flat

Technically, this isn't a cabin—or a yurt.

It's better described as luxury camping for people who like their camping to include a real bed and a private bathroom.

The Stargazer Tent is the one we'd look at for a couples' getaway. It has a king bed, private bathroom, private deck, in-tent heating, and perhaps the best feature of all: a viewing window above the bed so you can look up at the night sky without leaving your blankets.

Under Canvas Yosemite is also California's first DarkSky Approved resort, making the night sky part of the experience rather than just something you happen to notice.

There are evening campfires, s'mores, live music, stargazing, and on-site dining.

In other words, you can spend the day exploring Yosemite and then come back and make the evening the main event.

Romantic move: Skip the phones for a few hours, grab some s'mores, sit around the fire, and see who spots the first shooting star.

Twain Harte

Talk about cozy...

At Gables Cedar Creek Inn, it means a little cabin tucked among the trees, a fireplace, a quiet evening, and the feeling that you've stepped away from everyday life for a while.

The Birch Cabin was practically made for this list. It's a comfy room-for-two with a queen bed, gas-log fireplace, full kitchen, and private patio.

The Cedar Cabin takes it up a notch with a king bed, fireplace, wood-burning stove, and the largest deck among the cabins.

And there's something particularly nice about Twain Harte in the fall. Grab dinner in town, take a walk through the village, come back to the cabin, and let the evening take its time.

Romantic move: Pick up some take-out, bring it back to the cabin, light the fire, and make the evening completely your own.

Pinecrest

There’s something wonderfully old-school about staying at Pinecrest Chalet.

The Chalet has been a Sierra tradition since 1952, and its collection of cottages and chalets gives you that classic mountain getaway feeling without giving up the comforts you actually want.

For a cozy weekend for two, we'd take a look at Cottage 7 — Pinecone.

It's a studio with a queen bed, a small loft, private deck, and gas fireplace. Nothing overly complicated. Just a comfortable little place in the trees that gives you a reason to spend more time outside during the day and a good excuse to stay in at night.

And the location makes the romantic part pretty easy.

Spend the afternoon walking around Pinecrest Lake. Take the scenic drive farther up Highway 108. Grab dinner nearby. If the weather cooperates, sit outside and watch the evening settle over the mountains.

Then come back, light the fireplace, and settle in.

Romantic move: Pack a thermos of coffee and take a morning walk around Pinecrest Lake before the crowds arrive. Come back to the cottage, light the fire, and make breakfast together.

Arnold • Highway 4 / Ebbetts Pass corridor

For the couple who wants a little more adventure with their romance, head toward Arnold.

We found a highly rated treetop cabin tucked among the pines with a private hot tub and infrared sauna on the deck.

That's enough to get our attention.

The cabin puts you close to Calaveras Big Trees State Park, the Arnold Rim Trail, mountain lakes, and the Highway 4 corridor toward Bear Valley and Ebbetts Pass.

Spend the afternoon among giant trees. Take a scenic drive. Stop in Murphys for wine tasting and dinner. Then head back to the cabin, fire up the hot tub, and watch the stars come out.

That's a pretty good fall Saturday.

Romantic move: Make the drive itself part of the date. Take Highway 4, stop wherever the scenery makes you want to pull over, have dinner in Murphys, and save the hot tub for the end of the night.

You don't really need an anniversary.

You don't need a special occasion.

And you certainly don't need to wait until Valentine's Day.

Sometimes the best reason to book a cabin is simply that you need quality time together.

Work has been busy. Kids have been busy. Life has been busy.

And you realize you could use 24 hours where nobody needs anything from you.

So pick a weekend.

Pack a sweater.

Bring a book.

Find a trail.

Order something delicious.

Sit by a fire.

And remember what it's like to have nowhere else you need to be, Except next to your love.

That's the kind of fall weekend we can get behind.
