There is a brief moment in the Sierra when things begin to change.

You can feel it in the morning.

Not enough to call it cold. Not yet.

But enough to reach for a sweatshirt before stepping outside.

The long days of summer are still here, but something is shifting. The busiest weekends are beginning to fade. The High Sierra is a little quieter. And suddenly, that trail you've been meaning to hike all summer doesn't seem quite so ambitious.

Welcome to September.

And quietly, it might be one of the best months to experience the Sierra.

The lake is still waiting.

The trails are still open.

Highway 108 is still winding its way through some of the most spectacular country in California.

But the season has changed its personality.

September is for taking the mountain drive you kept putting off.

For packing a picnic and heading toward Pinecrest without needing a detailed plan.

For wandering through Columbia or Murphys on a weekday afternoon.

For finally hiking that trail you bookmarked three months ago.

For sitting outside a little longer because the evening air finally feels just right.

And perhaps that's what makes September special.

It doesn't demand much.

There isn't the frantic energy of trying to squeeze everything into summer vacation. There isn't yet the rush of the holiday season.

There's simply a little more room.

Room on the trail.

Room in the campground.

Room in the day.

If you're looking for a little inspiration, here are a few ways we'd spend the next few weeks:

Take Highway 108 as far as you can.
Stop somewhere you've never stopped before. The journey is part of the experience.

Explore a Gold Rush town.
Columbia, Jamestown, Sonora, Murphys or Groveland all offer their own version of Sierra history—and a good excuse for lunch.

Pick one trail.
It doesn't need to be epic. Just get outside.

Plan a "no itinerary" day.
Pick a direction in the morning and see where the Sierra takes you.
